PLEASE LEAVE THE HOUSE THE WAY YOU FOUND IT
WELCOME TO THE WHITE HOUSE
We’re very grateful that you’ve chosen our place to spend a few days relaxing and catching the sights of Martinborough. The White House is more than 100 years old, but only the last few of those years have been in Martinborough. We found the house in Hunterville, a few hours up State Highway One, and undeterred by the fact that it was in a pretty sad and sorry state we had it relocated to its current home. We spent a year renovating and landscaping and had several happy years here with our wheaten terrier Murphy before needing to relocate back to Wellington for work and health reasons.

STONE BENCH TOPS
Please don’t place hot dishes from the oven directly on the bench tops; this will damage them. We’ve left wooden boards out for hot plates, and for chopping food. There are more chopping boards in the drawer under the hob. Using sharp knives to chop directly on the bench top will also damage it. The marble does not cope well either with acidic food and drink, including fruits, lemons, tomatoes etc, or wine. These all mark the bench top and require professional restoration to remove. If you do have any spills, wipe them up quickly with a damp cloth. Would I get marble bench tops again? Probably not for the reasons above!

HEATING
The radiators are powered by a thermal heat pump. The panel for turning it on & off and adjusting the temperature is in the hallway by the main bathroom. Slide the button to manual and raise the temperature up and down with the arrows. You may find you need to set the temperature a little higher than you are used to but we find setting the temp around 21 degrees keeps the place pretty toasty in winter. If the system isn’t going please give our property managers Taylors a call; sometimes the water pressure drops (just a consequence of being on tank supply) and it switches off but it’s an easy fix for us to get them back up and running. (Also a reminder to turn the system off when you leave as it is expensive to run!).

TELEVISION
The Wifi password should have been made available with your booking. It’s on the bottom of the modem if you need to find it again. Being rural means broadband is not available so it will be slower than you are used to in town. To use the TV turn on the sky box first with the Sky remote then use the black remote to turn on the TV. Then go back to the sky remote to change channels.

INDUCTION HOB
Turn on any element by pressing the power on/off symbol. Press the illuminated bars to select the heat level. B means booster - it will bring a pot to the boil very quickly. Important: induction works like a magnet. You need to place the pot on the hob for it to work. If there’s nothing on the element it won’t heat up. It will just flash then turn itself off.

OVENS
The top oven is a steam oven. It’s tricky to use and we struggle with it ourselves. But there are instructions on you-tube if you want to give it a go. The bottom oven is controlled by the knobs on each side. The knob on the right is the control knob. On the left is the return knob. The return knob takes you to the previous selection. It also turns the oven light on and off. For more detailed instructions - scan the QR code on the next page.

COFFEE MACHINE
There is a coffee machine - Make sure water at the back of the machine is topped up before using. One pod per person per night.

LAUNDRY
There is a washing machine & dryer. Laundry powder is provided.

BATHROOMS
Please use the extractor fans in both bathrooms; the bottom switch on the light switch panel will turn them on.

WATER
All our water is rainwater, from the two tanks beside the house. During summer, the tanks can get low so it helps to be mindful of water use. The water in the tanks by the house is sterilised with a UV filter and is safe to drink. In fact, we take back flagons of water to Wellington because it is so much nicer than town supply.

OUTSIDE BATH
There is a power switch on the side of the deck by the steps to turn on the hot water. Press the round button on the bath to start the jets.

SEPTIC TANK
The septic system is a self sustaining eco system called natural flow; this means toilet cleaners using bleach will damage the delicate eco balance, and wipes etc should not be flushed down the loo.

RUBBISH / RECYCLING
Please use the rubbish bins provided and where possible keep recycling seperate from daily waste. There is a large black bin for all kitchen and general rubbish to go in. There are two bins provided - Green/maroon bins are for clean, unbroken bottles and jars/ recyclable plastics / aluminium cans and tins. Large black bin with yellow lid is for paper, newspaper, magazines & cardboard.

BUGS
You may encounter some insects; this is beyond our control. The Wairarapa is known for its ants, cockroaches, and flies.

CLEANING
Please do not use spray cleaners or chemicals to clean the bench tops. A clean damp cloth is all that should be used, particularly the marble island. Any chemicals will damage it. Cleaning spills off the floor should only require warm water and sunlight liquid.
